MANILA, Philippines - Kris Aquino is seeking to make permanent a temporary protection order (TPO) against James Yap, after the star cager allegedly made "amorous advances" toward his ex-wife and caused "distress" on their son.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News' Marie Lozano on Wednesday, Atty. Francisco Chavez said a hearing is set on April 8 where Aquino will appear as witness against her former husband. "We will be presenting evidence, and we will also be given the opportunity to present this evidence, and for the court to decide whether or not to make the TPO permanent," he said.
The request for a TPO against Yap was filed by Aquino last Wednesday, March 15, before a Makati City court, and was granted on the same day with an effectivity duration of 30 days.
According to Chavez, "the stay-away order against Mr. Yap prohibits him from going to the residence, the school, or any other place including the place of employment of Kris, or any of the places frequented by Kris, and even the housemaids. James Yap cannot be [as near as] 100 meters [to Aquino and their son]. The order prohibits James Yap from committing or causing any of the acts complained of in the petition."
The TPO stems from an incident last December 3, when Yap allegedly attempted to "force himself" on Aquino.
In the presence of Bimby (their son, James Yap, Jr.), [Yap] wanted to inflict himself or force himself on Kris." He continued, "This was, of course, vigorously rejected by Kris. He was making amorous advances, pretending like he was attempting to rekindle the sparks of an old romance. But their marriage has already been annulled, and Kris has reminded him that they're no longer a couple."
Aquino and Yap were married in civil rites in July 2005. Their marriage was declared null in February last year. Their son, Bimby, was born in April 2007. "Medyo nagalit siya dito," Chavez said, referring to Aquino's rejection of Yap's alleged "advances." "He persisted until Bimby, despite his very small frame, placed himself in between Kris and James and pushed his father and hit his father and told him to leave the premises." The lawyer added, "Eventually he left the premises and this young boy shut the door and felt secure after he left."
According to Chavez, this was not the only time the basketball player caused "distress" on Bimby, which the lawyer said is also the basis of the issuance of the TPO. "Noong January, mayroon na namang insidente na nag-promise naman itong si James Yap na bibigyan niya ng gift 'yung anak niya kung pupunta siya doon sa Serendra (condominium). Pumunta naman 'yung bata, pero pag dating doon, hindi naman binigyan ng gift, so masyadong disappointed 'yung bata," he said.
Another incident allegedly occurred early this month, Chavez added. He said that this was documented and is planned to be used as evidence in the April hearing seeking the permanent effectivity of the protection order. "Last March 13, madinig lang ang boses niya, gusto siyang marinig ng father niya, nagfi-freak out 'yung bata. Mabuti naman lahat ito na-document, nakunan ng video ang reaction ng bata sa tawag ng kanyang ama, kahit na sinasabihan 'yung bata na kausapin 'yung ama niya. In other words, ayaw na talaga nung bata na makita o madinig ang boses ng kanyang ama," he said.
Yap's Version
In an interview on Wednesday, Yap said he was deeply hurt by Aquino’s accusations because all he wants is to be a father to their son.
"Nasasaktan ako kasi 'yung anak ko sobrang sama na ng tingin sa akin. As a father, sobrang nasasaktan ako, sinasabihan akong ‘I don’t like you, you’re a liar. Iniisip ko ano bang ginawa ko? Wala naman akong ginawa. Tinanong ko, ‘Sinong natuturo sa ’yo niyan?’ ‘Mama, mama.’ Ang ginagawa ko na lang kapag sinasabihan ako ng masama, sinasabi ko na lang, ‘Bimb tingin ka sa mata ni papa. Love na love ka ni papa,’" he said.
In Aquino's pleading, she accused Yap of making 'overt sexual advances' which she resisted. Aquino said her former husband acted "as if he was still entitled to his matrimonial rights" in full view of their son.
Yap defended himself against these accusations and shared in detail what really happened last December 3, the date when he supposedly “abused” Aquino. "Magpapaalam na sana akong umalis. Sabi ko ‘Bimb kiss mo na si Papa kasi aalis na.’ Nandoon si Kris, nandoon ang bata. Sabi ni Bimb ‘I don’t like.’ Ako naman, ‘Bimb kapag hindi mo i-kiss si Papa, iki-kiss ko si Mama.’ Tapos ang reaction ni Kris, ‘Yuck, yuck, yuck,’" he said.
"Ako naman, ayaw talaga ako i-kiss ni Bimby so lumapit ako kay Kris, hinawakan ko siya [sa braso]. Paghawak ko, sabi ko ‘Bimb look o, iki-kiss ko na si Mama mo.’ Tapos biglang si Kris nagsabi na ‘Sinasaktan mo ako, you’re hurting me.’ Parang sinasabi niya kay Bimb ‘Sinaktan ako ng Papa mo.’ Tapos siyempre 'yung bata akala talaga sinsaktan siya," he added.
"Nag-react ang bata gumitna sa amin tapos hinug siya. Pag-hug niya sabi ‘No no I don’t like you... Ang mukha ni Kris [nang-aasar pa]. Kaya sabi ko, ‘Ikaw talaga!’ Sinusumbong ko kay Bimb. ‘Bimb look at your mama’s face oh, she’s smiling.’ Tapos pagtingin ni Bimby, galit-galitan na naman siya," he said.
Yap stressed he is the one telling the truth and he had no intentions of hurting Aquino. "Never ko siyang sinaktan, never ko siyang ginamitan ng kung ano man. Takot ko lang kasi siyempre alam ko naman kung nasaan sila ngayon, nasa power sila. Hindi naman ako tanga na gagawin ko iyon," he said.
After the incident last December 3, Yap said he was able to talk to Aquino the next day and that’s when he told Aquino about his frustrations. "The next day, tinawagan niya ako.
Ang yabang yabang mo naman,'" he said.
Yap maintained he has moved on from his former wife and he just wants to spend time with Bimby. "Wala naman na akong pakialam kay Kris eh. Ang gusto ko lang makasama ang anak ko. Bakit ako sinisiraan sa anak ko? Para ano? Ano bang gusto niya? Tapos ngayon ina-accuse niya ako na rapist ako? Grabe naman iyon. Itong lumalabas ngayon sinasabi ni Kris rapist ako or kung ano man ang nakalagay diyan, walang katotohanan iyan," he said.
Yap already sought a hold departure order from the court before Aquino leaves the country. He also appealed to Aquino's camp for them to have a dialogue to settle things. Yap's camp is set to file a comment opposition in on Thursday in response to Aquino's TPO.

MANILA, Philippines - The parents of actress Heart Evangelista have expressed strong objection to her relationship with Sen. Francis "Chiz" Escudero, detailing instances when they had felt "disrespected" by the lawmaker whom they accused of being "arrogant" and an "alcoholic."
On Tuesday, Cecile and Rey Ongpauco, the parents of the actress whose real name is Love Marie Ongpauco, held a press conference to formally appeal to their daughter and Escudero to reconsider their relationship.
The move of the Ongpaucos came after Escudero's statement in February that he intends to marry Evangelista in 5 years.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News' Mario Dumaual, Cecile expressed her concern about the future of her daughter, "She has not thought about this sufficiently or properly. We think she should think about this for a longer period of time. Nag-aalala lang kami sa anak namin," she said.
Cecile went on to enumerate their reasons for opposing their daughter's relationship with the lawmaker.
Among them is the prospect that Evangelista and Escudero may not be able to marry as Catholics. Referring to the annulment of Escudero's marriage with his former wife Christine Flores last year, Cecile said: "He was married with two children and he got an annulment in court, but not in the Catholic church. That means he can only marry our daughter outside the Catholic church. Our family, including Heart is Catholic, so we do not wish for Heart not to marry in the Catholic church," she said.
Cecile also cited the age difference between her 28-year-old daughter and the 42-year-old Escudero, and Evangelista's supposed lack of prepareness for a domestic life. "Natatakot lang kami para kay Heart, dahil para sa amin hindi pa siya handa maging isang asawa ng isang politician na napakatanda sa kanya nang 16 years," she said. "Parati naman naming sinusuportahan si Heart. Hindi naman sanay si Heart sa gawaing bahay, o pagpapatakbo ng bahay, kasi masyado namin na-baby 'yan, overprotected, na-sheltered masyado," she said.
The third reason for their objection, Cecile said, is Escudero's alleged "fondness" for alcohol. Recalling their first meeting with the senator, both Ongpaucos said they felt disrespected by Escudero, whom Rey referred to as lasinggero. "Sa aming experience kay Mr. Escudero," Cecile said, "parang nakikita namin na mahilig siyang uminom. Noong unang pagkakataon na nagpakilala siya sa amin dahil hiniling niya kay Heart na ipakilala siya... dumating siya, nakainom. Amoy ng alak. nakasalampak doon sa sala namin, parang ganoon. Noong ikalawang beses na pumunta siya sa bahay namin, ganoon ulit, nakainom, nang-aalok pa ng bote ng alak."
Rey added, "Wala akong nakitang maganda eh. Puro arogante siya, bastos. Makakita ka namang pinakilala sa akin, nakahilata sa upuan, lasing. Una kaming nag-meet, 'yun na agad nakita ko sa kanya. Tuwing nakikita ko, naka-inom. Kawawa naman 'yung anak mo, hindi natin masabi, balang araw... siyempre concerned kami eh, natatakot kami para sa anak namin, baka may mangyari," he said.
Referring to their first meetings with Escudero, Cecile said her family feels that the lawmaker has never rendered them any form of respect.
The Ongpauco matriarch also recalled an incident when Escudero allegedly ignored her when she visited Evangelista's film set. "Ito lang nakaraan, bumisita lang ako, sinorpresa ko ang anak ko sa isang location taping. Pag dating ko roon, pati 'yung direktor, lahat tumatayo, abalang-abala sila, pinapaupo ako lahat. Pero itong si Mr. Escudero nakasalampak lang doon ulit sa upuan. "Nakita na niya na binibigyan akong respeto, pero para bang... hindi ko maintindihan kung sinasadya, kung anuman 'yon. I felt humiliated, I felt embarrassed," she said.
In detailing their fifth reason for disapproving of the relationship, Cecile cited "reliable sources" in saying that "Escudero has certain strange habits hidden from the public view. We are very concerned that this kind of news might be based on truth. Siyempre nag-aalala kami para sa aming anak," she said.
For their sixth reason, both Rey and Cecile said that they hoped Escudero would have been more "traditional" in forming a relationship with their daughter. "Mr. Escudero has never given us the courtesy of formally asking my daughter's hand, or even asking our permission to court her, so that he could tell us about himself about his family. This behavior is not accpetable in our Philippine culture," Cecile said.
Evangelista's mother said they believe "Mr. Escudero is manipulating our daughter against us. He is feeding her with arguments to use in order that she will become estranged, and now is almost hostile to us, her family."
Rey said they no longer had communication with their daughter since she allegedly moved out of her condominium unit in the same building as her parents. "Hindi na ako nakakausap eh. Wala na eh. umalis na nga sa condo bigla eh. Sa amin, para ka naman sinampal noon eh, angt agal mong inano eh... biglang mawawala. Anong dahilan? Eh 'di may dahilan," he said.
Cecile added, "Alalang-alala na kami sa anak namin, and up to this time, Mr. Escudero has not even bothered and refuses to explain himself to us."
Evangelista's mom also pointed at Escudero for allegedly causing the rift among their family. She likewise appealed to senator to "cool off" with the actress to give her time to reconsider their relationship. "Sinasabi ni Mr. Escudero na naiipit lang daw siya sa kalagitnaan nitong away-pamilya. Kasinungalingan ho iyon. Siya ang talagang puno't dulo, ang pinanggagalingan ng problema naming pamilya ngayon. Umaapela ngayon kami kay Mr. Escudero, kung maaari lang naman, pabayaan niya nalang muna 'yung anak namin para medyo magpalamig nang kaunti, makapag-isip-isip," she said.
In an interview with the newscast "24 Oras" aired on Tuesday, Escudero said he prefers to distance himself from the supposed tiff between Evangelista and her parents. "Hindi ako showbiz. Hiwalay ang pulitika sa personal na buhay. Ayaw kong manghimasok sa hindi pagkakaunawaan sa pagitan ng anak at ng kanyang mga magulang," he said.
And todays another bad dream...when will i wake up.
Both Rey and Cecile maintained, however, that they "have no problems" with their daughter, and are merely calling on Esudero to leave their daughter and straighten out himself. "Wala kaming problema kay Heart," Cecile said. "Ang problema namin itong si Mr. Escudero. Parang kakaiba siya, nakakatakot siya para sa isang magulang. Nakakatakot na tao."
"Akala namin nung umpisa, 'Wow, mukhang matalino naman, magaling magsalita,' eh sa personal palang buhay... so as a parent, nakakatakot," she said.
Pati 'yung anak namin na-involve tuloy... Kaya it's about time na magsalita na ako. Ayoko ng mga ganito eh, kaya lang kailangan malaman nila kung ano siya," he said.
Stressing that they merely want the best for their daughter, Rey said they are not meddling with her relationship. He said they only hope that she think things through regarding her supposed plans to settle down with the senator.
Asked for his message to Evangelista, Rey said, "Ang masasabi ko sa anak ko, Heart, sana makapag-isip-isip ka rin. Unahin mo muna ang magulang mo bago ibang tao. Pag-isipan mo 'yan. Darating ang araw, baka ibalik sayo 'yang, magka-anak ka, 'yung anak mo bastusin ka rin. Hindi maganda 'yan."
"At sana mag-isip ka rin na huwag naman kaagad 'yan, kung anuman ang naiisip mo, nabibigla ka. It takes time. Bigyan mo ng time ang sarili, bigyan mo ng panahon. May career ka pang dapat tapusin. Huwag kang pabigla-bigla, mag-isip ka muna... Hindi kami nakiki-alam sa'yo, concerned lang kami sa'yo," he said.
Evangelista, meanwhile, on Monday took to micro-blogging site Twitter to openly express her love for Esudero. She has also appealed to her parents to let her be with the senator, saying she has found happiness.
“It happened to me a long time with Jericho and at that time, I was very young kaya nagparaya ako and I thought it would make my parents happy. I understand that you know, they want the best for me and they are very protective,” she said in an interview with "24 Oras" aired Tuesday.
“Nahihiya lang ako of course kay Chiz and sa family niya kasi wala naman silang ipinakitang masama sa akin. Napakabait nila tapos nagkaroon pa ng mga kasinungalingan, ng mga paninira,” Evangelista said.
“Nahanap ko na ‘yung taong para sa akin, huwag na nila ilayo ang taong mahal ko. Masaya na ako and everybody deserves to be happy,” she said.
During the press conference on Tuesday, the Ongpaucos also emphasized that their going public with their tiff with Escudero has anything to with politics. Escudero is seeking re-election in the May polls.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday stopped for 120 days the implementation of the controversial reproductive health law, whose constitutionality is being challenged before the court.
SC Public Information Office chief Theodore Te said the magistrates voted 10-5 in issuing a status quo ante (Latin for "the way things were before") order against Republic Act 10354, which was enacted by President Benigno Aquino III in December 2012. "SC en banc issued a 120-day Status quo Ante order in the consolidated cases involving the RH law. Vote was 10-5," Te said.
The status quo ante order directs the parties to observe the status or situation before the implementation of the RH law. Those who dissented were Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, and Associate Justices Antonio Carpio, Mariano del Castillo, Estela Perlas-Bernabe and Marvic Leonen. Sereno, Perlas-Bernabe, and Leonen are Aquino appointees to the high court. The magistrates sitting en banc also set the oral arguments on the consolidated cases against the law on June 18.
Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman, principal author of the RH law, meanwhile downplayed the high court's decision and expressed confidence that it will still uphold the constitutionality of the legislation after the oral arguments.
"The status quo ante order issued by the Supreme Court is only a temporary delay in the implementation of the Reproductive Health law to enable the High Court to fully assess the merits and demerits of the pending petitions challenging the constitutionality of the RH law. I firmly believe that eventually the constitutionality of the RH law will be sustained," Lagman said in a statement.
The lawmaker maintained that the RH law did not "defile" the right to life enshrined in the Constitution. "The RH law does not legalize abortion. In fact, it acknowledges that abortion is illegal and punishable and is not a family planning option or method," he said, adding the law "upholds" religious freedom and allows the government to support parents rear their children.
"The accusation that the RH law is offensive to religious freedom is a patent aberration. The act is replete with provisions upholding the freedom of religion and respecting religious convictions. The guarantee of freedom of informed choice is an assurance that no one would be compelled to violate the tenets of his religion or defy his religious convictions against his free will and own discernment of his faith," Lagman said.
Women's rights advocate EnGendeRights said it is unfortunate the SC stopped the implementation of the RH Law.
"Every day 11 mothers die from pregnancy and childbirth complications. It's unfortunate that the SC issued a 120-day status quo ante order against the Reproductive Health Law. We badly need the law to reduce unintended pregnancies and maternal mortalities... In our interviews with poor women in Manila City last November, we found that 65 percent of the women were candidates for ligation, meaning they have way surpassed their desired number of children," Atty. Clara Rita Padilla, executive director of EnGendeRights, said. 'I'm confident RH legality will prevail'
Sen. Pia Cayetano, a co-sponsor of the RH Bill in the Senate, said in a statement Tuesday that the high court's order is just part of the judicial process. "It does not in any way say anything against the validity of the RH Law. It will simply allow the petitioners/opposers to air their concerns," she said. "But what bothers me is the 90-day period before the June 18 oral arguments. How many lives will be lost during this period? How many more mothers will die of birth complications? How many infants will get sick and die, and how many abortions will take place? I would like to think that it is not the intention of our Supreme Court to deprive the poor of RH services from the government. But while we wait, sadly it is the poor who will suffer. "In the end, I'm confident that the legality and constitutionality of the RH law will prevail and our people will start to benefit from it."
On the other hand, Senate Majority Leader Tito Sotto, who opposed the bill during its deliberation in Congress, welcomed the Supreme Court's decision.
A statement released by his office said Sotto "consistently maintained that the RH law is against our pro-life Constitution."
"Sotto said the Supreme Court knows what is best for our country and that he has full trust and confidence in their collective wisdom," the statement added.

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine government is ready to bring the country’s Sabah claim before international courts even as it gathers evidence to buttress its position while pursuing dialogue to end the violence in the territory.
Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda announced the development in a press briefing yesterday where he also pointed out that a “win-win” approach to ending the violence in Sabah is for the followers of Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III to lay down their arms and leave the territory peacefully.
"So what win-win solution they have, it's all in their hands. We have always batted for a peaceful resolution to this conflict. So I have no idea what they have in mind. I think the burden is on them. We’ve always said that, ‘lay down your arms and let’s talk’. But this has gone beyond that: the violence, blood has been spilled; and so, it’s really up to Mr. Jamalul Kiram," Lacierda said.
He also clarified that Cabinet Secretary Jose Rene Almendras was talking about the possibility of the government addressing the Sabah issue using the same legal tack being used in resolving the Panatag Shoal dispute with China.
"Secretary Almendras said the President has tasked Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr., Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario and Justice Secretary Leila de Lima to study the matter. If the group finds basis to file a claim, the Philippines will then elevate the matter to the international courts where, as in the Bajo de Masinloc case, the government will be retaining private lawyers to handle the claim, if necessary," Lacierda said.
The STAR's interview with Almendras and acting Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Gov. Mujiv Hataman was done on March 6 at The STAR office in Port Area in Manila and not in Corregidor Island on Monday. Aquino and some Cabinet officials were in Corregidor last Monday during the commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the Jabidah massacre.
In his discussion with The STAR editors and reporters, Almendras said there was no way the Aquino administration could be accused of giving up the Sabah claim because they were spending so much "getting lawyers to follow the legal processes."
In the same interview, Almendras said De Lima had told the media that "we are preparing a legal study on how to revive" the Sabah claim by going to the International Court of Justice. But Lacierda said this did not mean lawyers had been hired since a study was still being made. "And, based on what Secretary Almendras told me, if there is a basis for the claim and the recommendation is to pursue the claim, then obviously – as in the case of the Panatag Shoal, as in the case of China – we will elevate it before international courts; and, in that instance, we will be hiring lawyers, private lawyers, to handle the case," Lacierda said.
Almendras and Hataman said there was no consulate or any official presence in Sabah until this time and that should dispel impression that the government had given up its claim. “The fight is not yet over,” Hataman said.
On reports that the sultanate had lifted its ceasefire declaration and that its followers in Sabah would fight back if attacked by Malaysian forces, Lacierda said "obviously, they have been decimated so what’s the effect of the lifting of the ceasefire?"
"You’ve been reporting everyday that there are some casualties and, some days, there are none. So, obviously, it didn't matter to the Malaysians whether the ceasefire was lifted or not," he said, addressing the sultanate. "Again, our call here is for a peaceful resolution and, apparently, we are onboard, other countries are onboard, but the sultanate is not onboard in this matter," Lacierda said.
He decried Kiram's rejection of "disengagement" as supposedly agreed upon between his brother Esmail and Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II. "We have done and we continue to do… What's the price of adventurism? Filipinos in Sabah…We are also taking care of their people from Sabah coming home and we’re providing assistance to all these things. We continue to do our efforts," he said.
Lacierda also said they were verifying reports that Kirams' supporters were tortured by authorities as claimed by Sultan Fuad Kiram I.
Fuad, who is claiming to be the legitimate ruler of the Sultanate of Sulu and Sabah, said that many Tausugs who had fled Sabah had marks of torture. "We are verifying those reports in media. Number one, we need to verify those reports first. DSWD (Department of Social Welfare and Development) is on the ground and they are documenting. We have not received any reports yet on that. So we’ll validate," Lacierda said.
Lacierda said that while embassy officials were able to visit some of the evacuation areas in Sabah "We only follow the reports also in Sabah that the Malaysian authorities provide us. It seems that there's no fighting as... there's no bombing incident anymore. I am not clear with what the Malaysians are doing right now. But it seems like there has been no large-scale fighting in Sabah and our Philippine embassy team has been able to visit some of the Filipinos there in Lahad Datu, in Felda Sabahat," Lacierda said.
He also said they had no new information on Kiram's brother Agbimuddin, who was leading the sultan's armed followers in Sabah. "Malaysian authorities have not been able to locate him yet," Lacierda said. "As far as we are concerned, our concern right now – which wasn't anticipated by the Kiram family – is the status of those Filipinos who are now coming home because of what happened in Lahad Datu. So we’re taking care of that now. We’re ensuring and providing assistance to those people who have left Sabah," he said.
Lacierda said Malaysian authorities have not responded yet to Manila's request for consular access or legal assistance to the sultan’s followers in custody. "Malaysian authorities are saying there are security concerns. So we hope that those security concerns will be resolved so that we will have access to the followers of Kiram under their custody," he said.
But consular services including issuance of passports and processing of travel documents have been made available to thousands of displaced Filipinos in Sabah wishing to return to the Philippines.
Two officials from the embassy, including Vice Consul Francis Herrera, left Kuala Lumpur on Monday, to join the embassy's humanitarian/consular team in Lahad Datu. There are two embassy humanitarian/consular teams attending to the needs of Filipinos in Sabah – one in Lahad Datu and the other in Tawau.
Labor Attaché Alicia Santos said human resource managers of 17 companies have informed the embassy that their Filipino workers are safe. "The humanitarian/consular teams are operating on a mobile basis, going to areas where their services are most needed. They are assisted by the embassy’s network of Filipino community leaders in reaching out to our nationals," said Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia J. Eduardo Malaya. The Philippines has no permanent consular presence in Sabah.
Earlier, upon the request of the embassy, the Department of Education and the Commission on Filipinos Overseas conducted a joint "needs-assessment mission" in Sabah to determine how best to provide alternative education to children of undocumented Filipino migrants who have limited access to public schools.
For the same endeavor, the embassy partnered with the Borneo Child Aid Society which runs some 120 Humana Child Aid alternative learning centers in Sabah's vast plantation estates, as well as with the Indonesian Children Education Awareness Foundation and the Society for the Education of Needy Children in admitting more Filipino children in their schools. "We are most grateful to the Filipino community leaders for being our pro-active partner in uplifting the welfare of the Filipino community in Sabah," Malaya said.
While the government continues to fend off criticism of its handling of the crisis, Sen. Francis Escudero is appealing to politicians and the public in general to support the President's Sabah initiatives.
"Let the president decide on the Sabah issue. Let's respect and support the President because he's carrying a heavy burden," Escudero said in Filipino in a press briefing in Malolos City.
He explained that in dealing with Sabah crisis, it is important that the country speaks in one voice. "Let's not expose our dirty laundry in public. Let the President do the talking and let's support him – right or wrong. Payback time should come later," he said.
The re-electionist senator also asked candidates in the coming polls to refrain from taking advantage of the issue. "Let's not dip our fingers into it. National interest is the issue here, not improving the image of politicians," he said.
He also scoffed at proposals that the country send an armed group to rescue the sultanate's remaining followers in Lahad Datu. He said Malaysia is unlikely to allow a foreign armed group to intrude into its territory.
Escudero said Malacañang had exercised the same restraint in dealing with the Chinese on the Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal issue. "Had we sent Navy ships to Scarborough, the Chinese would have made the same move or even more," he said.
In Tagum City in Davao del Sur, United Nationalist Alliance senatorial candidate Mitos Magsaysay said President Aquino must personally appeal to the Prime Minister of Malaysia to stop the attacks in Sabah.
Magsaysay also expressed relief that the President had finally acknowledged the legitimacy of the Philippines’ Sabah claim. "Why didn't he talk to the Malaysian prime minister? Everytime there is death, it will get worse, the situation will get worse. He should appeal because it will not die down," Magsaysay told reporters.

In the daily morning show, Good Morning Club, which I co-host daily on TV5, we recently discussed an interesting topic: What should a parent do if the child shows early signs of being gay?
It was a sensitive topic handled with care. My co-hosts Edu Manzano, Amy Perez, Chiqui Roa-Puno and I shared the same view: That gayness is not a plague. That if one of our sons turns out to be gay, we were unanimous in saying that “We shall accept and love our sons just the same, just as much.”
For this article, I sought the expertise of family counselor and Trio Tagapayo of Amy’s Face to Face, noted psychologist Dr. Camille Garcia, who answered the frequently asked questions (FAQs).
What are the early signs? I’ve read that when a two- or three-year-old plays with girl’s toys, that doesn’t necessarily mean he is gay since that is just the “curiosity phase.” Is this true? At what age will the signs of true “gayness” come out?
Dr. Camille: “Others may say that doing something effeminate is already a sign of gayness like playing with female toys, being effeminate in some ways, etc. Remember the child, at this age, does not know the girl-boy gender yet. It’s up to the parents to make the child be aware of his/her gender: 'Ikaw ay babae, siya ay lalaki.’
“True gayness comes out at pubertal stage. (It is when the child desires or has a crush on the same sex.) What is wrong with some parents is encouraging the behavior. It’s like when a parent says, 'Kung ano ang binigay sa amin ng Diyos tatanggapin namin.’
“Remember ang binigay ng Diyos na anak is a girl or boy. A six-year-old can already identify his/her gender. Good parenting structures the right role of a person.
“What creates the reinforcement of the said behavior is when parents allow the thinking (e.g., ‘Sige anak, ok naman na maging bakla ka, tatanggapin ka namin.’)”
Should parents be alarmed and arrest the situation? Or encourage it?
Dr. Camille: “Arrest the situation, ’yun ang tama. But most parents encourage the situation. Tatanggapin agad. Let’s be moral in making the child understand the situation, di ba yun ang dapat. We tell our child, ‘Anak, mali ito.’”
How should the parents address this? Some parents resort to threat and extreme military-style punishment. Some parents go to great lengths to explain to the child the consequences of being gay, so that the child can think, then make a choice.
Dr. Camille: “Threat and punishment encourage the child more to do things wrongly, because you are shutting off the situation. Make sure you discuss with your child openly. ‘Alam mo anak, hindi namin gusto yung ginugusto mo.’
“Explain that he is a boy and therefore, as boys, they grow up as men and their partners are women. ‘Hindi kasi tama ang makasama sa buhay at magpapamilya ay parehas na lalaki. Kung ayaw mo itama ang ginugusto mo, hindi namin matatanggap yun.’
“Things can be discussed fully. At least you have attempted to talk it out with your child, explaining the moral and complex implication of what he likes. Remember you can have effeminate ways, but you never desire men. Yun yung emphasis ng pagtuturo sa bata. After pubertal stage, it’s a different story.”
Why is being gay still considered a shame for conservative families, even now that we are living in modern times that gays are accepted in our society? Gays (both male and female) are contributing well to our society, in different professional fields.
Dr. Camille: “Most families still cannot accept the fact that something went wrong with their parenting. They feel that something is not right — moral issues are always part of the issues, especially to the Christian and close family ties. “Traditions and culture as well are still part of the family structure that greatly influences their views regarding homosexuality.
“Remember, since child rearing and proper parenting are part of one’s holistic disposition, the lifestyle and preference he will choose is considered to be part of what a parent has nurtured and instilled in him.”
Is being gay really a lifestyle choice? Or genetically influenced?
Dr. Camille: “The genetic predisposition is there but if from the start it is corrected, maiaayos. Remember, genetic predisposition. Hindi minana, na at the start bakla siya. Ipinanganak siyang lalaki o babae. Ikaw na magulang ang mag aayos at magtuturo. Thus, the lifestyle and preference become prevalent rather than the genetic factors. This is the most Christian and appropriate explanation I can give.”
I thank Dr. Camille for her expertise and for shedding light on this sensitive topic.
As a mom who has a three-year-old son named Nio, my personal take on the matter is this: Nio, when curious, plays with his big sister’s toys. But we always point it out to him that those are toys for girls, and these are toys for boys. We compare toys so that he will understand.
Before he turned three, he was fully aware and could already distinguish the girls’ toys from the boys’ toys. We realized that playing with his big sister’s toys is his loving way of bonding and playing with his Ate Antonia. When big sister is not around, Nio doesn’t touch the girly toys.
Apart from toys, he chooses what clothes and shoes to wear, and his choices are very masculine. I think the presence of a dominant male figure in our home, that is Julius my husband, is a great factor why Nio is very much male. They play rough games such as boxing, kiddie baseball, sword fights, wrestling and the like. I think that activities such as these will help establish the child’s gender role.
I am simply talking from experience, having a young son, a three-year-old.
Now, if you ask me — what if my son grows up to be gay? I will not encourage. But will I accept? A mother will always accept her child. A mom may not agree with all of her child’s choices or preferences, but in the end, being a kind human being is more important than what your gender is.
We do our best as parents. We guide our children based on societal norms while balancing what is personally and morally acceptable to our own families. But once they are adults and choose to live life a certain way, it is their choice, and along with it, the consequences.
A parent must be there to support and love their children all the way, no matter what. We all deserve to be happy and free.
We are all children of God, and in the end, regardless of gender, it is God who will judge us.
