Folks, meet the HTC Mini, an NFC-equipped, Bluetooth-enabled semi-dumbphone that works as a companion to your not-so-mini smartphone.
To clear things up, the HTC Mini is not a standalone product but rather an accessory phone bundled with the HTC Butterfly when you purchase it in China. What it does is it syncs to the HTC Butterfly via NFC and Bluetooth which enables it to receive SMS, notifications, even calls in behalf of the 5-incher. If you’re familiar with the Sony Android SmartWatch, the concept is similar except you can do more with the Mini.
I’m sure you’ve also noticed that the Mini’s design looks like glorified TV remote. Well, that’s because it also functions as one when the HTC Butterfly is connected to the TV via HDMI. The Mini is also a remote camera trigger for the Butterfly’s camera, and a “phone finder” to help you find your misplaced 5-incher.
In summary, the HTC Mini exists to eliminate the disadvantages of having a large smartphone. A pretty good concept, but it kinda makes you wonder why you bought a gorgeous and expensive 5-inch smartphone in the first place.

Acer showcases their newest phone, the Liquid E1, with Jellybean, a 4.5-inch qHD display, a dual-core CPU and more.
The phone rocks a 1GHz dual-core processor with 1GB RAM. There’s also
a fairly huge 4.5-inch display with a resolution of 540 x 960,
accompanied by 4GB of internal storage, a micro SD card slot and decent
camera specs. It is expected to run Android 4.1 Jellybean, lightly
skinned with Acer’s own customization.
We have manifested a certain love for the phone’s design and the
configuration – and we are hoping that it comes out affordable. A lot of
details aren’t still revealed such as the processor used and many more,
so we’re all hoping that it turns out to be worth the wait once it
comes out. Acer Liquid E1 specs:

If you’re still recuperating from your holiday expenses (I think we
all are) but in a hunt for an Android handset with a sizeable screen,
then Cherry Mobile’s new 5.2-inch handset may just fit the bill. Catch the pricing and official specs after the break.
The Omega has been in CM’s pipeline for
several months already, but it’s only recently that the local handset
company has added the behemoth smartphone to their portfolio.
As you can see in the image above, the Omega is being retailed for Php6,699.
Its spec sheet is what you’d typically expect from a smartphone at this
price point – 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal memory
and pair of snappers (5MP main, VGA secondary). Besides the screen size,
however, another note-worthy feature of the Omega is its 2300mAh which
should give you decent mileage. Cherry Mobile Omega specs:
5.2-inch WVGA display, @179ppi
Mediatek MT6577 1.0GHz dual-core processor
512MB RAM
4GB Internal Memory
Expandable up to 32GB via Micro-SD
5MP autofocus camera w/ flash
720p Video Recording
VGA Front-facing camera
Dual-SIM, Dual-Standby
HSDPA 7.2Mbps, HSUPA 5.76Mbps
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP
GPS w/ A-GPS
2300mAh Battery
Android Jelly bean
The Cherry Mobile Omega will be available in two color variants:
Black and White. There’s also talks about releasing an HD version (Omega
HD) of this handset, but details about it at the time of writing is
still scarce. We’ll update you guys as soon as we receive a word about
it.
HTC has announced in their home country Taiwan a new entry-level, budget-friendly Android smartphone – the HTC Desire U.
The HTC Desire U has a 4-inch WVGA (480 x
800) display which equates to a pixel density of 233ppi, a 5 megapixel
AF shooter with LED flash, Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX technology, WiFi
b/g/n, and a 1,650mAh battery. Under the hood is a 1GHz processor, 512MB
of RAM, and 4GB of internal memory with microSD support.
The Desire U runs Android with HTC Sense. HTC did not indicate what version of Android it will be running but I’m betting on Ice Cream Sandwich since HTC has already mentioned before that HTC smartphones with 512MB of RAM won’t be getting Jellybean.
No details on local availability yet but it is priced at $275 or around Php11,200.

We’ve featured a few Starmobile handsets in the past and one of them
is the flagship Astra which we reviewed last November. Now Starmobile
follows up with a new flagship called the Crystal – a 4.5-inch dual-SIM dual-core qHD Android smartphone.
It’s hard to deny that the Starmobile Crystal’s design was inspired
by the Samsung Galaxy S3. While some might see the Cyrstal as just some
sort of an S3 knockoff, it’s good to know that this new flagship has a
good build. Although made entirely of plastic, the Crystal is packed
tight meaning there’s no sign of creakiness and feels solid in the
hands. At 9.1mm thick and 148g of weight, it is also comfortable to hold
and carries a decent amount of heft.
Starmobile boasts that the Crystal has a “stunning screen display”
which is actually a 4.5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 540 x 960.
This equates to a pixel density of 245ppi. Partner that with an IPS
screen and you’ll get a display with an above average quality. Having
owned smartphones with high-density displays, I can definitely say that
the Crystal’s display looks good.
The Crystal also has an 8 megapixel BSI (backside illumination) rear
camera with LED flash and a 2 megapixel front. Powering the device is a
1,700mAh battery and runs a stock Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box. Starmobile Crystal Specs:
4.5″ IPS display @ 960×540 pixels, 245ppi
Mediatek MT6577 1.0GHz dual-core processor
PowerVR SGX531 GPU
512MB RAM
4GB internal storage
microSD up to 32GB
Dual-SIM, Dual-Standby
HSDPA 7.2Mbps, HSUPA 5.76Mbps
Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP
GPS w/ A-GPS
8MP autofocus BSI rear camera w/ LED flash
720p HD video recording
2MP front-facing camera
1,700mAh Li-Pol battery
Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich
136 x 68 x 9.1mm
148g
The Starmobile Crystal has a price tag of Php7,990 and comes with a free screen protector and jelly case inside the box. Watch out for our full review in the coming weeks.
A couple of weeks ago, Sharp launched a number of handsets in the
Philippines. The flagship unit is this Sharp SH930W Aquos phone that
sports a full HD 1080p display, the first one in the Philippines.
Sharp has only recently entered the mobile phone market in the
Philippines but they’re heavily banking on their strength in the display
technology (Sharp IGZO display). They are probably the first one to
actually ship a full HD 1080p smartphone in the Philippines (Sharp
SH930W Aquos phone).
Although the screen size is already at 5 inches, the entire body of
the handset is actually almost the same size as the Galaxy S3. Actually,
even the shape and curves of the Aquos SH930W is very similar to the S3
(with a bit of inspiration from the One X) and in some instances we
find the Sharp handset thinner and a bit sexier.
The display is impressive and you will definitely notice this when
you play full HD videos or view a full resolution photo. I thought they
could have made the screen brightness a notch or two higher though.
Nevertheless, it’s a pretty sexy-looking handset.
Though it’s a minor thing, we noticed that Sharp is an eager-beaver
when it comes to branding. There’s a huge and very visible “Aquos Phone”
label up at the front and another fairly large Sharp logo at the back.
The hardware specification is pretty good, not really a quad-core
phone but still a dual-core Krait. And yes, it comes with Jellybean
right out of the box. Sharp SH930W Aquos specs:
5″ Sharp IGZO display, full HD 1080p @ 1920×1080 pixels, 440ppi
Qualcomm 8260A Krait 1.5GHz dual-core
2GB RAM
Adreno 225 Graphics
32GB internal storage
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 4.0
HSPA+
8MP rear camera, LED flash
1080p video recording @ 30fps
2MP front-facing camera
GPS w/ aGPS support
Android 4.1.1 Jellybean
Li-Ion 2100mAh battery
Suggested retail price of the SH930W is Php19,990 and is now available in stores across Metro Manila.
Only a week has passed since we first reported the existence of an
8-inch Galaxy Note, but an Italian tech website has already taken a few
snaps of the rumoured tablet. Check out the photos after the break.
The photos came from Digital Day,
a tech publication based in Italy. At this angle, we can see that the
Samsung has kept the design philosophy that they’ve used in their recent
offerings. Having said this, the tablet looks an over-sized Galaxy Note
2.
Its internals is rumored to consist of a 1.6GHz quad-core processor
which is coupled with a 2GB of RAM. The Galaxy Note 8’s display is also
believed to pack a 1280×800 resolution which will play host to the
skinned version of Android Jelly bean.
The Samsung Galaxy Note
8 is expected to be unveiled in Barcelona in time for the Mobile World
Congress. We’re expecting to hear more about this rumored slate as we
inch closer to the highly anticipated event.

Samsung Philippines officially launched the Galaxy S3 Mini
last night, along with Globe which is exclusively selling it for the
first month. Let’s delve deeper in to the SGS3’s little brother with our
first impression after the break.
Design and Construction
The S3 Mini, as you might expect, is almost the exact replica of
Sammy’s current flagship handset in terms of design. It bears the same
Nature-inspired design with rounded edges and metallic lining on the
sides. Like it or not, the halfling’s body is also made of plastic with a
so-called Hyperglazed coating which is similar to its bigger sibling’s
build.
Differences between the two are scarce and a bit tricky to spot,
especially if you don’t have an S3 with you to compare. During our brief
time with the phone, we were only able to notice a pair of minor design
dissimilarities between this device and its flagship brother:
• Placement of the front-mounted VGA camera and the sensors beside it. (Top Left for the S3 Mini and Top right for the S3.)
• Placement of the built-in flash and speaker beside the 5MP camera at the back. Display
The handset features a 4-inch WVGA display similar to the first
Galaxy S. This kind of display configuration may not be as popular as it
was back then, but people who don’t have a taste for big-ass
smartphones should be well at home with the S3 Mini’s modest screen. OS, UI and Performance
Concealed underneath the glass and Hyperglazed plastic is the S3
Mini’s meek hardware configuration. This comprises of a dual-core 1GHz
processor, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. It’s not gonna wow
any onlookers, but should be enough to handle most of your basic
smartphone needs in a satisfactory manner.
This phone shares the same Nature UX-laden version of Android Jelly
bean version (4.1.2) with the SGS3 and SGN2, minus some of the tasking
features such as the Multi-Windows view. Given the phone’s mid-ranged
specs, it was still able to handle Samsung’s UI quite impressively. It
was fluid and responsive for the most part with only minor hiccups in
the multitasking aspect. Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini (i8190) specs:
4-inch Super AMOLED display @ 800×480 pixels
1GHz dual-core processor
Mali-400 GPU
1GB RAM
8GB/16GB internal storage
up to 32GB via microSD
3G/HSPA 14.4Mbps
NFC
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth v4.0
5-megapixel (rear) camera w/ AF and LED flash
VGA front camera
Video recording/playback: 720p
GPS w/ aGPS support
FM Radio (RDS)
TouchWiz UI 4.0 (Nature UX)
Android Jellybean (4.1.2)
Li-Ion 1500mAh battery
Dimension: 121.55 x 63 x 9.85 mm
Weight: 111.5g Conclusion
The Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini is, in every aspect, a smaller and modest
version of the South Korean firm’s current flagship handset. It has the
same look and feel as the SGS3 but with a smaller screen and a mid-range
specification. It may not be the best in class in terms of bang for the
buck, but it’s there to provide a more affordable alternative to the
company’s high-end offering.
This Android smartphone can be had for Php14,990 or get it free under
Globe’s UnliSurf 999 plan. The plan includes unlimited surfing and an
option to choose 1 of the four Plan Freebies. At the time of writing,
the S3 Mini is still not available on Globe’s website but we were
informed that they are on the process of including it on their handset
offerings.
Nokia was reported to be planning to launch a Windows Phone flagship codenamed EOS which will use the same PureView technology found on the Nokia 808 PureView.
According to The Verge’s sources, the
Nokia EOS will be the “true PureView Windows Phone” and will use a large
sensor similar to the one powering the Nokia 808.
Like the previously reported Lumia 920 successor – the Nokia Catwalk,
the Nokia EOS will also be clad in aluminum rather than polycarbonate
as statement of its flagship status. No further details have surfaced
but the Nokia EOS is expected to debut this year.
What do you say folks? If the reports are true, will you go for the Nokia Lumia 920 or wait for the Nokia EOS?

We’ve seen Mozilla’s Firefox OS being ported to a number of devices
during its development, now we’re finally seeing it in its own home in
the form of the Developer Preview handsets.
The Firefox OS Developer Preview Phone,
as the name suggests, is a developer’s phone which aims to help
developers create software for the Firefox OS. The phone is made by
Geeksphone in partnership with Telefonica.
The first one is the Geeksphone Peak which sports the following specs:
Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 8225 1.2Ghz x2
UMTS 2100/1900/900 (3G HSPA)
GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (2G EDGE)
4.3″ qHD IPS Multitouch display
8MP camera (back) with LED flash + 2MP (front)
4GB ROM, 512MB RAM
MicroSD, WiFi N, Light & Prox. Sensor, G-Sensor, GPS, MicroUSB
1800 mAh battery
The second one is the smaller and less powerful Geeksphone Keon:
Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 7225AB 1Ghz
UMTS 2100/1900/900 (3G HSPA)
GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (2G EDGE)
3.5″ HVGA Multitouch display
3MP camera
4GB ROM, 512MB RAM
MicroSD, WiFi N, Light & Prox. Sensor, G-Sensor, GPS, MicroUSB
1580 mAh battery
No details on pricing as of the moment but developers will be able to purchase the units from Geeksphone starting next month.

Without much fanfare, HTC quietly slips its latest flagship phone in
the country, the 5.0-inch HTC Butterfly which is already available right
now in HTC stores.
The HTC Butterfly is the biggest handset HTC has come up so far and
the looks did not disappoint if you’re a fan of HTC and their design
principles. It comes in either red or white (I guess black is so last
year) and what we played with is the white one. I simply love the
edge-to-edge curved Gorilla Glass covering the front of this phone. What
I’m not keen of is the silver rectangular strip on top which is just a
design element.
The 5.0-inch display sports a 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution for a
whopping 440 ppi pixel density on a Super LCD 3 panel. Honestly, I can
barely notice any difference in terms of sharpness and clarity comparing
it to my iPhone 5 and its 326 ppi pixel density. Even tried watching a
1080p video on it and although it looked really good, you most likely
won’t notice any difference viewing the same file on an S3 or an iPhone
5. I guess having that much resolution is just a numbers game and
shouldn’t be a factor when getting this phone. It’s nice to have but not
critical.
On top you’ll see the 3.5mm audio jack, the Power button and also the
covered slot for the microSIM and microSD slot. Yes, finally microSD
support is back on a high-end phone. This phone comes with 16GB of
internal storage so that microSD card could go a long way especially if
you’re storing a lot of 1080p videos.
There’s an aluminum strip on each side with a mesh pattern which I
initially thought were speakers but again, they’re just design elements.
At the bottom is the covered microUSB slot for charging. Am not a fan
of such flaps especially for a slot that you often use as it wears out
over time. I wouldn’t mind if they leave that microUSB port exposed but
HTC was looking for a sleek uniform all-around look on this one.
The back is made of a polycarbonate shell with a polished sheen. It
has that dull but still glossy look which makes it different from other
handsets. I like how the 8.0 mp camera lens doesn’t protrude anymore
unlike their HTC One X.
It also uses the same fast lens with ImageSense as that of the One X
and its ilk. Focusing and taking the shot is really quick, sometimes
faster than the iPhone 5.
I love how the handling of this phone feels. I thought 5-inch is too
big for me already but the Butterfly feels like you’re holding a
4.7-incher. The smooth curved and wide back and the thin profile makes
it easy to grasp and even do some one-handed phone operations.
Powering the HTC Butterfly is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5GHz quad-core processor which is the same as that of the Nexus 4
and the ASUS Padfone 2. It also has a 2GB RAM which is becoming the
staple for quad-core phones this year. Tried Quadrant on it and the
Butterfly gave an impressive score despite running only on 1.3GHz
frequency at that time.
This phone is not LTE-ready so if that’s important to you, might want
to look elsewhere. Battery rating on the Butterfly is at 2020mAh which
is an odd decision since the HTC One X+ already has a 2100mAh battery.
According to the HTC sales personnel in HTC Mall of Asia, the HTC Butterfly goes for Php32,190 for cash payment or 3-months installment credit card. There’s also a 12-month payment option which bumps the price to Php35,000. It comes with a pair of Beats in-ear headphones.
HTC Butterfly Specs:
Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro (APQ8064) 1.5GHz quad-core processor
Adreno 320 GPU
Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean
5.0-inch Super LCD 3 Full HD 1080p @ 1920×1080 pixels, 440ppi
Corning Gorilla Glass 2
2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, microSD up to 32GB
Lenovo just announced that the company has sealed a deal with LA
Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant to a marketing partnership to launch Lenovo
smartphones and tablets and to enhance the Lenovo brand in China and
Southeast Asia.
Kobe Bryant joins the small list of sports celebrities to promote a
smartphone brand. Last April, Samsung invited Miami Heat’s LeBron James
as spokesperson for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and it has been a
successful marketing partnership.
“I am excited to partner with a market-leader like Lenovo,” said
Bryant. “I work to pursue excellence in all that I do, and I believe
that Lenovo shares that brand DNA and is going to set itself apart as a
technological leader for smartphones across Asia.”
Lenovo is known for its affordable entry-level to mid-range
smartphones but in this year’s CES, they unveiled their flagship
super-slim IdeaPhone K900
with its 5.5-inch IPS screen, an impressive camera running on an Intel
Atom processor. We’ll probably see this phone heavily marketed in China
and Southeast Asia with Kobe Bryant’s help.
Additionally, Lenovo remains laser focused on tablets with many new
Android and Windows-8 devices, such as the IdeaPad Lynx and ThinkPad
Tablet 2 and will work with Bryant to profile these PC Plus products.
It seems that Cherry Mobile is not yet done hitting all kinds of
screen sizes for their Android smartphone lineup. They recently
announced the Cherry Mobile Cruize with its 5.2-inch touchscreen which
will only retail for Php4,499.
Why is it cheaper than the 5.0-inch Titan? Or rivaling the price of
the 4.0-inch Flare? Well, for one it only has a single-core 1GHz
processor so it’s made for the casual smartphone user. Then it also only
has a WVGA screen on its humongous display. That’s 800 x 480 resolution
for you which results to poorer pixel-per-inch density than the Titan
which has the same screen resolution.
It does have dual-SIM support just like most of Cherry Mobile’s
current smartphones. Everything else is quite standard : 512MB RAM, 4GB
internal storage with microSD support, 5MP rear camera with flash, VGA
front camera. What’s notable is its 2,500mAh battery which should make
it last a little bit longer than their previous dual-SIM Androids.
The Cherry Mobile Cruize is already available in the market for
Php4,499. If you don’t have the budget for the Titan but size is a
priority, the Cruize can be the phone for you.

Huawei has just announced a mid-range smartphone packing a quad-core processor and a 4.5-inch HD display – the Ascend G615.
Aside from the 4.5-inch IPS HD display
with a resolution of 1280 x 720, the Ascend G615 sports an 8 megapixel
camera with dual-LED flash, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage with
microSD support, WiFi, Bluetooth, a 2,150 mAh battery, and powered by
Huawei’s in-house processor – the 1.4 GHz quad-core HiSilicon K3V2.
The Huawei Ascend G615 comes with Android Ice Cream Sandwich
out of the box. A temporary setback since it will be updated to
Jellybean in March. No details on pricing yet but it is set for release
in Germany starting next month.

SamMobile reported that Samsung may have something to announce in the
upcoming Mobile World Congress that will surely delight outdoorsmen. It
ain’t gonna be pretty, but it sure is tough.
The rugged handset goes by the name of Galaxy XCover 2 (GT-S7110). It’s slated to be the successor of the first XCover that the South Korean firm launched at the latter part of 2011.
This IP67-certified smartphone is said to better than its predecessor
in almost every aspect; from the screen size, down to the processor.
Here’s a look at both phones specs to highlight the advancements that
Galaxy XCover 2 brings to the table.
The upcoming Galaxy XCover 2 isn’t exactly the cream of the crop when
it comes to specs, but it provides substantial upgrade from its
predecessor which should be more than enough to cover for your basic
smartphone needs when you’re out in the wild.
Pricing and availability is yet to be announced, but there’s a good
chance that we’ll see more info about this device as we inch closer to
MWC 2013.

We went to several stores yesterday to check out the HTC Butterfly,
ended up at the HTC Concept Store in Cyberzone, SM MegaMall and was able
to play around with both the white and red models of the unit.
The Butterfly has a 5-inch display size but once you hold it with one hand, you won’t really think it’s that big.
Having used the 5.3-inch Galaxy Note and the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2,
the 5-inch HTC Butterfly feels closer to the size of the 4.7-inch HTC One X+ (more of a smartphone than a phablet).
There are two color variants, black & red and white & red,
with the front side all covered in Gorilla Glass 2 while the back side
is a slightly curved polycarbonate body.
The shape is reminiscent of the HTC 8X except that the finish is
really glossy all around the body and not matte like the 8X. It feels
very light too for its size.
We inspected the 1080p display, and having used a lot of the 720p
displays on the other flagship phones, we couldn’t really distinguish it
from the rest on casual use. It might be different once we watch full
HD movies or some hi-res photos but I guess that’s where the idea of
pixel density comes in — that anything beyond 300ppi will look almost
the same to the human eye. Nevertheless, the 441ppi looks impressive on
paper.
The micro-SIM card slot and micro-SD are both found on the top end of
the phone, beside the power button and 3.5mm audio port, and is hidden
by a small flip cover. The bottom end is where the micro-USB port is
also hidden under a similar plastic flip cover.
The handset has a pretty solid body, a nice design that shows
attention to detail and the two-tone adds to that premium look. However,
the polished finish at the back makes it very prone to fingerprint
smudges. That’s a departure to the usual matte finish HTC did with the
One X+, One S as well as the WP 8X and 8S.
HTC moved back to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor with the Butterfly
(they used NVidia Tegra 3 on the One X and One X+). See full hardware
configuration below. HTC Butterfly specs:
5.0-inch Super LCD3 full HD 1080p @ 1920×1080 pixels, 441ppi

The LTE option is not available to the units released in the
Philippines but we’re hoping the telcos will carry that variant later
on.
Check out the quick video we took of one of the units below. Show’s
how HTC Sense UI makes good use of that screen resolution (more spaces
for icons and widgets on the home screens).
Based on the figures given to us by the HTC Concept Store in
Cyberzone, SM Megamall the suggested retail price of the HTC Butterfly
is Php32,190 which can be had for zero interest on
12-months credit card installment. However, if you get it for cash or
3-month CC installment, the price drops to Php30,990.
