DOLE Releases List of Top 10 Hot Jobs in Metro Manila

MANILA, Philippines - A mixture of high-end jobs and clerical jobs make up the list of top ten hot jobs in Metro Manila, the Department of Labor and Employment said. Based on data in 2011, the Bureau of Labor and Employment Statistics made available today (February 19, 2013) the top ten jobs that dominated the vacancy list.

As expected, call center agents were at number one, with at least 18,026 average vacancies per quarter. BLES said "demand for call center agents remained robust in 2011 on the back of the country’s global leadership in 'voice contact' business outsourcing."

Number two on the list are sales representatives, with an average 6,913 number of vacancies per quarter. "The need for sales representatives and salespersons cut across industries as their services are vital in improving the marketing of the products and services of enterprises."

BLES classified more than two-fifths of the total job vacancies per quarter to be "high-end jobs" or those comprised mainly of professional workers (19.6%); technicians and associate professionals (16%); and corporate executives, managers, proprietors and supervisors (6.7%). This is based on a total of 75,000 job openings in various types of occupations at the end of each quarter of the year.

Third on the top ten hot jobs in Metro Manila are the computer professionals, with an average vacancy of 5,779 per quarter. BLES said “demand for computer professionals particularly in the areas of programming and system analysis and designs increased, driven by diversification of BPO industries towards higher value chain products and adoption of modern technology in many industries.”

Fourth are the clerks, with 5,533 average vacancies per quarter.



Fifth are shop salespersons, with 3,528 average vacancies per quarter.



Sixth are protective services workers, with 2,565 average vacancies per quarter.



Engineers are on the seventh spot, with 2,140 average vacancies per quarter.



Cashiers and ticket clerks are on the eighth spot, with an average of 1,951 vacancies per quarter.



Accountants and auditors are ninth, with an average of 1,292 vacancies per quarter.



Tenth are the debt collectors, with an average of 1,111 vacancies per quarter.

Jobstreet.PH Survey: Sales Executives to Dominate 2013

Job vacancies for sales executives continue to increase this year.

Let the commissions roll. If you are looking for sales jobs, then this year is for you. While 2012 witnessed the demand of IT professionals, 2013 is seen to be a special year for sales executives. Similar to last quarter's hiring activities, job vacancies for the said specialization will continue to be high; Companies have continued to increase the demand for sales executives even as 2013 kicked off. In a recent survey conducted by JobStreet.com, almost half of the responding employers started the year with a high requirement for sales jobs. Their workforce is expected to increase partly because of the rapid expansion of manufacturing companies, and it seems that they will not be slowing down any time soon.

But what is a sales team without the marketing department? Just like last quarter, marketing specialists will also be in demand. Although the expected hiring rate isn't as high as last time (28.9 % vs 26.5%), the difference isn't at all too big.

Engineers and accountants who are still doing their job search should be more optimistic, as this is also a good time for them. 40% of the responding employers say that have job vacancies for engineers (electrical and other engineering positions), while 25.6% are hiring accountants and finance practitioners.

With one-fourth of the Philippine workforce filled up by 25-34 year olds (according to DOLE and NSO’s database), it doesn’t come as a surprise that junior professionals are needed most by companies. 56.6% of the responding employers will be hiring employees with less than 4 years of work experience, while 24.2% have job vacancies for supervisors and specialists. Competition remains high for top management positions, such as President and CEO, since only a small sliver (1.6%) opened their hiring doors for Q1 2013.

The bulk of job vacancies may be coming from the sales department, but every segment will benefit from the expansion of multiple companies. There are also manufacturing firms that have transferred back from China, and foreign investors coming to the Philippines. With this, job search should be easier in Q1 2013. More than half of responding companies (51.7%) have planned to increase their workforce as early as the first quarter.

It is indeed a good start for jobseekers, especially those looking for sales jobs – we can see the manifestations of economic growth this early. The start of 2013 is good for the Philippine economy, and companies are hopeful that this will be sustained throughout the year.

Google Opens Philippine Office in Makati, Starts Hiring

MANILA, Philippines - Google has finally opened an office in the Philippines with the launch of its new unit in Makati.

The tech giant, in a briefing on Wednesday, said the country is a key market in Southeast Asia amid its growing Internet population.

"The Philippines is a key country in Southeast Asia in terms of its digital economy and tech-savvy population," Julian Persaud, managing director of Google in Southeast Asia, said. "This new office will allow us to better engage with our local users, partners and advertisers. Over 33 million Filipinos access the Internet regularly... [and this] is set to grow exponentially," Persaud added.

Google's new office will be situated in central Makati, although executives did not say if it will be as innovative as the firm's state-of-the-art centers in the US.

Persaud also declined to say how much the tech company will be investing the Philippines, only saying the company will pour in its "blood and soul" for this venture. "We're not here for short-term gain. We're here in Manila for the long term," Persaud stressed.

Meanwhile, Officials of the tech giant were injured, albeit very minor, during the ceremonial hitting of a "palayok" (clay pot) at the event where the company announced it is opening a Philippine office.

Google's Philippine country manager Narciso Reyes sustained a small cut on the hand, while Southeast Asia general manager Julian Persaud got a small cut and bump on his forehead after the "palayok" incident.

Narciso Reyes, newly-appointed country manager for Google Philippines, said the firm will be working on localizing its products for the Filipinos. "User journey is tantamount to us... we will be localizing our products more and giving them more information and tools. We want Filipino users to find and access local information relevantly and very quickly," he said.

The former Google employee in the US is heading back home as he now has one of the coolest jobs in the tech industry. His task: to lead a sales and marketing team in the Philippines to further the growth of their services by localising more of their content to fit the needs of Filipino netizens.

Reyes also shared Google plans to provide a cost-efficient platform for Philippine businesses wanting to advertise online. "Our local team will be committed to providing better services to our Filipino users and to helping businesses - large and small - grow locally and globally, contributing to the growth of the Philippine economy," Reyes said.

Google is currently hiring for its Philippine office but executives declined to say how many employees will comprise the new unit. But Reyes and Persaud said Google is looking for Filipinos who will better give them an insight of current local market as the tech giant is eyeing to tap Philippine advertisers.
