MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has
said there will be more police checkpoints in the coming days to monitor
the implementation of the election gun ban that will start on Jan. 13.
"There will be more checkpoints in various parts of the country to
implement the gun ban," said Chief Superintendent Generoso Cerbo, PNP
spokesperson.
Cerbo said police have been instructed to strictly follow standard
operating procedures, when manning checkpoints. Among these are the
following:
- Policemen have to be in proper general office attire (GOA) or patrol uniforms and not combat uniforms or camouflage;
- The team has to be led by an official;
- There should be a sign that indicates that it is a checkpoint and the name of the team leader; and,
- There should be a marked police vehicle.
PNP 10 Checkpoint Guidelines
- Checkpoints must be well-lighted, properly identified and manned by uniformed personnel.
- Upon approach, slow down, dim headlights and turn on cabin lights.
- Never step out of the vehicle.
- Lock all doors of vehicles during inspection since only visual search is allowed.
- Never submit to physical and body search.
- Motorists are not required to open glove compartment, trunk or bags.
- Be courteous but firm in answering, assert your rights, have presence of mind and do not panic.
- Keep your driver's license and car registration handy.
- Be ready to use your mobile phones at any time; speed dial emergency numbers.
- Report violations immediately.
