Facebook hits Google with its own search engine

Facebook has just declared war on Google with a new search engine dubbed Graph Search, tech site Gizmodo reported Wednesday (Manila time).

The new "search monster" gives users a way to find friends by pulling all the information that matters to a user "within the context of your social life."

"Graph Search doesn't replace the current Facebook search, but offers a massively expanded new way to explore your web social life. Photos, places, interests, and of course, people can all be cataloged and called up instantly," it said.

Citing an example, it said a search for a sushi restaurant would have had Google deliver a well-linked list, but Facebook will present suggestions based on where a user's relations had checked in.

Eventually, Gizmodo said Graph Search will scan the kind of words a user's friends used to describe the place (favorable or unfavorable).

"But for now the Like is the biggest indicator that you should check this place out," it said.

"And if it works, we'll have a reason to skip opening a new tab headed to Google.com—an enormous victory for Facebook, and a profound change in how we all use the Internet every single day," it added.

For now, Graph Search is currently in beta, rolling out "slowly" but is a live, constantly updating list of results.

Searches are built using simple, natural language searches.

Gizmodo also noted the new feature "looks incredibly fast," and allows for the kind of spastic hopping around.

However, it also noted every piece of data a user shares on Facebook now becomes searchable, though it will be privacy aware - only available to the friends you want it to be available to.

"You won't be dumped into some Internet database. If you want to filter parts of your life out of Graph Search, you can do that with the newly-expanded privacy controls Facebook rolled out last month. Facebook is even going to prompt you to review everything you've shared before Graph Search launches, meaning you'll be able to sweep undesirable photos under the query rug," it said.

On the other hand, it is still a work in progress - one cannot yet search all of the bazillion posts you and your friends have written, and it's not available on mobile. — TJD, GMA News
